Mountaineer Mindy Roberts Receives Prestigious Award
Mindy Roberts and Jim Feltus
Mindy Roberts and fellow Mountaineer Jim Feltus
Each year, the National Park Service recognizes one individual or group within the entire national park system for outstanding public safety achievement. The Andrew Clark Hecht Memorial Public Safety Achievement Award is presented for prevention of accidents that may cause serious visitor injuries or fatalities. This year's award went to theMount Rainier National Park Climbing Program and its partners, recognizing the reduction in climbing fatalities, search and rescue missions, and overall increases in visitor safety on the upper mountain from 2006-2008  as a result of a number of actions taken within the park and by outside partners.

Mindy's work with Climbing Ranger Mike Gauthier to create a training/education curriculum through the Tacoma Mountaineers was included as part of the nomination for this award, and the park system felt it was one of the significant factors in helping improve the safety record of climbers attempting to climb Mount Rainier.

Mindy was presented with the award on Wednesday, June 24, at a ceremony in Ashford, WA. Also in attendance were Board President Eric Linxweiler and Tacoma member Jim Feltus. Congratulations Mindy!

Junior Naturalist Program
Junior Naturalists An exciting naturalist program built just for young children and their families!  Each event is run by knowledgeable volunteers who will present different aspects of the natural world to your budding naturist.  We’ll provide fun ways to instill the importance of conservation and respect for our environment through games, arts, and crafts.  The focus will be on exploration in a hands-on learning environment.  All events will be on Saturdays midday, and will last for a few hours each.  There should also be plenty of time afterwards for further family playtime and socializing.  Destinations will all be in the Seattle area, with exact times TBA.  Children will receive recognition for completing each event, and awards for finishing the whole program.

Junior Naturalist Outings
May 30 - Bot For Tots: A Native Wildflower Scavenger Hunt
June 20 - Digging-Swimming-Crawling-Flying: Who's Who at the Beach

July 18 - Quack, Splash, Ribbit! A Day At The Wetlands
August 15 - Little Fish, Big Fish: The Amazing Salmon Adventure

Stan Engle: 1921-2009
The Mountaineers mourns the loss of a 58-year member of The Mountaineers who served as a paradigm for fellow volunteers and wilderness advocates. Stanley Russell Engle died Monday, March 23, in Tacoma at the age of 87. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. in Tacoma on Saturday, March 28, at the Epworth LeSourd United Methodist Church, 710 S. Anderson St.

Stan led many Mountaineers trips throughout his years. He loved to hike, backpack and bicycle just as much as he loved to climb. His gregarious engagement with Mountaineers leaders and fellow volunteers will be remembered as his trademark just as much as his positive tack to taking on a volunteer project.

Stan was an invaluable member of The Mountaineers, and a tremendous figure in local environmental advocacy.

We posted a few pictures of the new building on Flickr. We will be adding to this photostream from time to time, so keep checking in to see what we've been up to.
