**Graduation requirements: (Mountaineers membership and the Basic Snowshoe course -or equivalent- is a pre-requisite for Backcountry Snowshoeing. ) 1 evening classroom session, 1 day long field snowshoe trip, 2 scheduled Mountaineers snowshoe trips, completion of separate avalanche training, navigation and wilderness first aid modules, which also fill those requirements for those who have or will take scrambles or basic climbing courses, and completion of a conservation activity.** This course will take snowshoeing to the next level. Topics include the proper use of an ice axe, avalanche awareness including terrain and snow pack evaluation, use of beacons and winter survival. If you have completed snowshoe lite in prior years that would also meet the requirement. Successful completion of this course will allow students to participate in all levels of snowshoe outings. Note: students may take two years to complete all requirements if they choose. There will be a discount for people who want to take all there snowshoe modules and sign up at one time. If you wish to take advantage of this option, see Snowshoe/Winter Travels - Tacoma and sign up for that instead of the three modules individually. Youth 14-17 are accepted only after committee interview and must be with a concurrently enrolled parent or guardian. There are no additional youth discounts for this course.

This session will meet at the Tacoma Program Center at 6:00PM on February 6 for a classroom session lasting till 9-9:30 PM depending on questions. An all day field trip will be held on Saturday February 22. The meeting place and destination are left open due to unknown snow conditions. It is possible that the field trip may need to be rescheduled due to lack of snow or extreme weather.
