Update: Spring 2024 Course Capacity and Alternatives

If this course is full or the class dates with available space don't fit your schedule, we recommend the following alternatives:

We do not currently plan to increase the size of this course (Spring 2024 Seattle Hybrid WFA).  Instead, we recommend any of the alternatives listed above.  The Seattle Branch  does not offer WFA classes in the summer, but we will have more in the fall starting in October.

Course Overview

This is a “hybrid” WFA course with a mix of online and in-person activities. You may also be interested in our In-Person WFA Course if you learn better in a hands-on environment or prefer a class with a fixed schedule.

Multiple identical classes are offered on various dates throughout the winter and spring. Students register for one class.

Each hybrid class consists of three activities:

  • Activity 1: Approximately eight hours of self-paced online training
  • Activity 2: A day of in-person training at the Seattle Program Center
  • Activity 3: An online one-hour final assessment exam

The class date for which you register is only the date for Activity 2, your in-person training. Your actual classwork starts two weeks earlier when you receive the links for Activity 1, the self-paced online training. After your in-person date you will have another week to complete Activity 3, the online final assessment.

When registering for a specific class be sure to allocate time in your personal schedule for about eight hours of online work before your in-person day, and another hour of online work after it. To ensure that everyone is prepared for the in-person day, the online training for Activity 1 must be completed at least 48 hours before the in-person training for Activity 2. It is your responsibility to self-manage your progress through the online parts of the course.

Instruction is provided by our training partner Base Medical. Upon successful completion all students will receive a Mountaineers WFA Course badge and a WFA Certificate from Base Medical that is good for two years.

This course posting includes only our winter and spring WFA classes.  We will offer more WFA classes in the fall as a separate course that will be posted sometime in mid 2024.  We do not typically offer any WFA classes in the summer.

This course does not include CPR or AED training.

Class Timeline and Milestones

Activity 1: Self-paced online training. About two weeks before your in-person training day you will receive links to the self-paced online portion of the class. The training consists of video-based lectures that can be taken at your own pace and reviewed as many times as you want as long as you finish by the deadline. The online training typically requires about 8 hours but can take longer if you want to repeat or review sections. This online training must be completed at least 48 hours before your in-person training.

Activity 2: In-person training day. This is a day of hands-on skill practice and scenarios.  It typically includes a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, weather permitting.

Activity 3: Final Assessment. The final part of the class is an online final assessment exam that must be passed with a grade of 80% or higher and be completed within one week after the in-person training day.  The exam typically takes about one hour.

In most cases the WFA badges for each class will be awarded within a week after the final assessments for the class are complete.
