Basic Sea Kayaking Course
Tacoma Branch-The Mountaineers' once-a-year course is loaded with practical information, hands-on education, introduction to kayak gear, and an emphasis on paddling safety. You'll learn basic paddling strokes, basic trip planning & navigation, and how to recognize & avoid dangerous situations. No prior kayaking knowledge or experience is required to participate in this course.

NOTE: To register for the course, please click the blue "apply" button and fill out the application form. Once you submit the form you may finish your registration on this page by clicking the checkbox verifying you have completed the application and clicking the yellow "register" button. You are not 100% registered until you complete both steps and receive confirmation of payments.
The course consists of one classroom session, an open water session consisting of two consecutive days, and two student paddles of less than nine nautical miles (nm).
All students are to register for April 23, 2022, classroom session, and only one open water session.
Participants should be moderately physically fit. Examples of this would mean the ability to lift 25 lbs. over your head, walk briskly for one hour, lift yourself to the side of the pool without using a ladder, and have the flexibility to sit upright with legs on the floor straight in front of you. Successful completion and enjoyment of the course is reliant on this minimal level of fitness.

Additional costs:
Students are required to provide a SINGLE SEA KAYAK and DRY SUIT for both open water days; (it can be owned, barrowed, or rented). The Kayak must be at least 14 1/2' long and have deck lines, foot rests and flotation at both ends. You are also required to have a spray skirt, paddle, coast guard-approved PFD, pump, and paddle float (Preferably an inflatable type).
Kayak Academy (KA) has full rental packages available for both the on water days and for the two club sponsored paddles required for graduating the Basic Sea Kayak 2022 Course.
Note:
If you attend the Lake Sammamish Park on the water days; you'll be able to rent your Kayak and Equipment at the Issaquah Paddle Sports Facility, located on the lake, owned and operated by Kayak Academy (KA).
If you choose to attend the American Lake, Harry Todd Park, in Lakewood, for your on the water days. You'll be required to transport your Kayak and Equipment yourself both days.
Kayak Academy (KA) also has rental packages available that will allow you to pick-up a kayak and equipment for multiple days to any destination in Washington.
