This 60-minute session involves a mix of presenter show-and-tell and group discussion. Feel free to bring questions, advice and ideas about menstrual cycles and periods as they relate to outdoor recreation and leadership. There may be time for Q+A. You’ll also receive written digital resources after the session.
Half the world will experience getting a menstrual period outdoors. But whether or not that’s you, do you know how to best handle it?
Let’s not only normalize wilderness menstruation, but also talk about the ins and outs of periods, menstrual products, female hygiene, and beyond in the backcountry.
You do NOT need to experience periods to benefit from this session. In fact, joining as a non-menstruator is important to everybody! We need to fill the outdoors with guides, company leaders, volunteers and participants who are body literate and unashamed to talk about a natural and common process.
We’ll discuss:
- How to build a backcountry period setup
- Product pros and cons for outdoor trips, and how to feel comfortable using them
- Minimizing impact on the environment
- How guides, companies and leaders can communicate about periods to participants
- How to plan when you know you’ll have a period during a trip
- Peeing and pooping for female adventurers
- Symptom assessment: when to consider evacuation for potential menstrual-related health issues
Send your period questions in advance so we can be sure to address them during the session.
