Basic Snowshoe Leader Mentorship - Tacoma

Snowshoeing & Outdoor Leadership Course

Basic Snowshoe Leader Mentorship

Interested in becoming a snowshoe trip leader? Begin the process here by learning the requirements and completing the application process.

We are always interested in adding more trips to the schedule and becoming a leader is a great way to help us out!

Before you can sign up to lead a Tacoma Mountaineers snowshoe, you must be on the leadership roster.  Leadership qualities, group and individual safety, experience, and level head decision-making are four major components to successful leadership.  Therefore, we have minimum requirements for those interested in becoming a volunteer trip leader.

Steps to Becoming a Basic Snowshoe Leader

  •  Graduate the Basic Snowshoe course (or equivalent1)
  • Successful completion of at least two Mountaineers Basic snowshoe trips
  • Participate as a junior instructor at a snowshoe course field trip (Requires Instructor Orientation Seminar)
  • Complete two mentored Basic snowshoe field trips
  • Successfully graduate the following courses and have a current badge on your profile:
    • Wilderness Navigation
    • Wilderness First Aid
    • Outdoor Leadership Course (may be completed within one year of becoming a snowshoe leader)

1 Basic Snowshoe equivalency is defined in the document "Basic Snowshoe Badge Equivalency Process" under Leader Resources.

Once your application has been submitted and reviewed by the Tacoma Mountaineers Snowshoe committee, you will be assigned a mentor.   For those who are not a current Mountaineers leader in any activity, you will need to complete two mentored Basic snowshoe trips.  For those who are a current leader in another Mountaineers activity (i.e.; Hike Leader), you need to have led a minimum of three trips in the last 12 months and complete one mentored Basic Snowshoe trip.
