- Experience in proper use of kayak gear
- Basic trip planning & navigation, including tides, currents, weather, and wind evaluation
- Launching and landing techniques
- Basic paddling strokes
- Getting back in your boat when capsized
- How to recognize & avoid dangerous situations
- Leadership and group dynamics
- Ergonomics, avoiding repetitive injuries, safe handling of heavy loads, shoulder protection
- Basic conservation principles as they apply to sea kayaking

equivalency
The Sea Kayaking Course Badge may be granted to members who have applicable experience and can demonstrate proficiency in the relevant skills. Applicants may submit an application that shows they have training or experience that meets or exceeds the requirements for course graduation, and demonstrate, without instruction, a level of competency in sea kayaking knowledge and boat handling skills that is equivalent to that expected of a sea kayak course graduate.
