The Mountaineers
The Mountaineers is incredibly fortunate to be located in a state with more than 12,000 miles of trails. On the first Saturday of June, communities across to country come together to celebrate National Trails Day. The Mountaineers invites you to help us celebrate our trails by joining a trail work party in some of our favorite places! This year we have four highlighted stewardship opportunities to help you get involved, and many more all year round.
This year is extra special because it's the 50th anniversary of the passing of the National Trails System Act! Among other things, the act designated eleven long distance trails as National Scenic Trails, and one of these trails is the Pacific Crest Trail. Three O’Clock Rock - Eight Mile Creek Trail
Join us for trail maintenance in a truly beautiful place. Located in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Eight Mile Creek Trail provides access to popular slab climbing at Three O'Clock Rock as well as access to beautiful Squire Creek Pass, which features stunning views of Three Fingers and Exfoliation Dome. Old growth Alaskan Yellow Cedars (up to 2,000 years old) populate the area, along with some waterfalls that trickle down the rock face. Afterwards, enjoy a barbeque! This trail day event has become a tradition for The Mountaineers Everett Branch, the Washington Climbers Coalition, and the Access Fund.
Church Creek – Satsop Lakes
Another trail maintenance opportunity in another beautiful place. This trail, located in Olympic National Forest, passes through old growth forest, gorges, waterfalls, and lakes. The Olympia branch of the Mountaineers adopted the trail at the request of the U.S. Forest Service. We’re working hard to steward this incredible resource, and we’d love for you to join us.
Cheasty Greenspace
A nature sanctuary in the heart of city, this urban forest is a unique and awesome space for all Seattleites to enjoy. Stewardship includes invasive plant removal, native tree/shrub planting, and pedestrian trail maintenance. The Mountaineers helps support Friends of Cheasty Greenspace Mt. View in this work. It’s an easy way to get a dose of nature and contribute to a good cause without leaving the city. Complimentary Tin Umbrella Coffee, gloves, and tools provided.
Shadow Lake Nature Preserve
Learn about and perform restoration in a beautiful and complex wetland system. This is a great way to get to know your local ecology first-hand.
