Day Hike - Snoqualmie Tunnel

This is a one-way hike with a car shuttle through the historic 2.3 mile Snoqualmie Tunnel, stopping for lunch at a picnic table with a nice view by the west end of the tunnel, then continuing west on the John Wayne Trail to the junction with the Annette Lake Trail, where we turn right and descend to the Annette Lake trailhead. A car shuttle back to the Hyak parking lot, where we started, completes the hike.

  • Mileage: 6.3 mi

  • Pace: 2.0 mph

Meet at 10 AM at the Annette Lake trailhead, reached by taking Exit 47 from I-90, turning right at the end of the exit ramp, left at the T junction and continuing to the end of the road, where the Annette Lake trailhead parking lot is on your right. Each car parked there must display a Northwest Forest Pass or National Park Pass.  Cars parked at the Hyak parking lot must display the Discover Pass.

We will leave half our cars at the Annette Lake trailhead and ride in the other cars to the Hyak parking lot at the east end of Snoqualmie Pass.  From there we hike the short distance to the Snoqualmie Tunnel, continuing through the tunnel to our lunch spot at a picnic table by the west end, where there is a nice view.   Then we continue down the John Wayne Trail and the Annette Lake Trail back to the trailhead where we left cars.  A car shuttle back to the Hyak parking lot completes the hike.  There are restrooms at the Annette Lake  trailhead parking lot, the Hyak parking lot and our lunch spot.

IMPORTANT:  There is no lighting in the tunnel, and it is always cool inside, even on a hot day, so it is required to bring warm clothing with reflective material and a strong light  for the tunnel portion of the hike.  Bicycles speed through the tunnel.  The reflective material allows them to see us so we don't have a collision.

This is the rare hike that is all either level or downhill.  The tunnel and the John Wayne trail are the remnants of the former Milwaukee Road railroad that delivered skiers to Snoqualmie Pass before roads were built there.  In the early days, a hotel housed skiers where the Hyak  parking lot is now located.  The restroom building there is built to resemble the former train station.
