What is Peaking for Pikas?
Peaking for Pikas, a subset of the Oregon Zoo’s Cascades Pika Watch program, opens the world of the American pika (Ochotona princeps) to volunteers as they hike to document these potato-sized “rock rabbits.” When volunteers come across a pika, or signs of a pika, they are asked to document their presence using their smart phone. This data is then submitted to citsci.org and compiled to create a baseline of the American pika’s distribution in the Cascade Mountains.
