Public Lands 101

About 60 percent of Mountaineers programs take place on federal public lands — like National Parks and National Forests, so a lot of our advocacy has a federal focus. Through Public Lands 101, you’ll get ready to advocate for the lands and waters you love by learning the basics of the different types of federal public lands and the agencies that manage them.

For most learners, this course should take no more than 60 minutes to finish. Upon completion of Public Lands 101, you’ll earn the Public Lands 101 badge for your Mountaineers profile. Public Lands 101 is organized into five lessons that will:

• Provide an introduction to public lands

• Discuss the four primary federal land management agencies or “land managers”

• Share about federal conservation designations

• Highlight some bedrock conservation laws

• Include steps you can take to protect public lands as an outdoor advocate

After reviewing all of the lesson modules, you’ll reinforce what you learned through a brief quiz. You’ll need to score at least 80% on the quiz to pass the course, but don’t worry if you don’t make it on your first try.
