Low and Slow: The Challenges and Benefits of Leading Mixed-Level Trips and Activities - Online Classroom

Participants from a wide range of experience levels and backgrounds sign up for Mountaineers courses to learn about expanding their skills and abilities to recreate outdoors; our field trips and activities offer an opportunity for them to put their new skills to the test. As volunteer leaders, how can we ensure that our trips and activities meet our participants’ needs for a structured, challenging adventure, and also meet our need to push ourselves? How do we show up as volunteer leaders on Mountaineers field trips and activities, and how do we leverage our skills to make sure everyone has fun (even if it ends up being type-2 fun!)?

Seminar Notes

This session is intended for Mountaineers trip leaders (and aspiring trip leaders!) at all levels of experience. Ben will facilitate the session using a mixture of direct-instruction and small-group discussions and activities; come prepared to talk with colleagues and (re)consider your role as a leader in the organization!

Presenter info

Ben Brown has worked in K-16 public education for more than a decade and has volunteered with The Mountaineers since he graduated Basic Alpine Climbing in 2016. He currently works as the Professional Learning Specialist in Child Nutrition Services with the OSPI, supporting the development and facilitation of effective training and professional learning opportunities. Ben has a Master’s of Arts in Teaching, and is ABD on a Doctorate in Education in Instructional Systems Design and Technology. He loves helping to design and improve teaching and learning practices!
