A resilient leader and decision-maker is a systems thinker, having the capacity to hold their own well-being and that of others in dynamic and fluid connection. Moving beyond field skills, we ensure here that you have the tools to design in yourself for the best decision capacity and communication. Participants will be able to:
- Evaluate at any one moment their current true level of burnout risk — personal and professional.
- Survey both evident and sometimes-hidden arenas of fragility so that the true difficulties can be addressed first.
- Engage in work and communication through an expanded understanding of arenas of internal robustness and external support.
- Self-monitor and adjust for communication practices that damage personal and team effectiveness.
- Translate and communicate the above skills within their teams, forming a larger, more resilient ecosystem of effective and burnout-resistant members.
This virtual workshop is designed to complement “Resilience Triage: Building Resilience as an Outdoor Leader.” While neither is a prerequisite to the other, participants are encouraged to attend both sessions.
Seminar Notes
This presentation will encourage attendees to speak up throughout the presentation and be interactive with prompting discussion questions interspersed within lecture segments.

Lorca Smetana is a dynamic innovator for people committed to vibrancy in the face of crisis, change, and burnout. An early survivor of mountaineering tragedy, she gained a graduate degree in diplomacy and became the founder of a medical aviation non-profit. Now a speaker, educator, and coach, a regenerative farmer, celebrant, and author, she architects wholeness in individuals, teams, and communities, helping them to be powerfully resilient ecosystems for themselves and in the world. For her students, Lorca brings a powerful new set of resilience framing and tools, creating agile and quietly radiant leaders in a challenging and rapidly changing world. She remains a climber, a sea kayaker, and a rider.
