Workshop requirements

This workshop is reserved for graduates and current students of Foundations of Leadership eLearning, Foundations of Instruction eLearning, and/or Foundations of Leadership & Instruction In-person Course. To support a dynamic discussion during the workshop, the completion or in-progress work of the Risk Management course within the Foundations courses is required for registered participants.

Interested participants are welcome to register for either the Foundation of Leadership or Foundations of Instruction eLearning courses after registering for this workshop. As long as the Risk Management courses are completed or in-progress at the start of this workshop.

Workshop Description

Our outdoor activities have risk, but most of us are not drawn to them because of the risk. We want to manage the risk so that we can enjoy our pursuits while keeping chance of mishap and accident to a comfortable level. We do this by building risk management into every decision. 

We will use scenarios to practice some of the practical risk management techniques. These lead to general discussion about risk management on trips, group dynamics, and decision making. 

Tom will present some practical ways to think about risk. He has found that these hold him  back from making ill-conceived decisions and encourage decisions that account for and manage the possibility of unwanted outcomes. Tom's hope is that you will find some of these techniques useful tools as you lead trips. Further, Tom hopes you’ll be inspired to improve and expand the scope of your leadership.

PRESENTER

Tom Unger grew up in Michigan, family camping and messing around in small boats on rivers and big lakes.  In 1989 he moved to Seattle to be near mountains and the ocean.  In 1993 he joined the mountaineers, got equivalency for basic climbing, completed the intermediate climbing course, and became a climb leader.  That started his 3 decade carrier of exploring the outdoors in various modes, including

• hiking and backpacking, especially traverses in the Sierra,
• crag and alpine climbing
• back country skiing
• canyoneering in Utah
• sailing in the great lakes and Salish sea
• scuba diving in Puget sound and the tropics
• flying small planes here and in the Idaho and Utah backcountry
• canoeing and packrafting locally and in the arctic
• sea kayaking in the Salish sea and the coast of Candida and Alaska
