Alpine Scramble - Cowlitz Divide

Trip

Alpine Scramble - Cowlitz Divide

A strenuous but gorgeous ‘out and back’ scramble to vast meadows and breathtaking vistas in Cowlitz Park (Point 6859 in the SE portion of Mount Rainier National Park). Lots of wildlife with bugling elk, soaring hawks, and a passel of ptarmigans. A strenuous trip at 18 miles and 5000’ of elevation gain.

  • Strenuous 5, Technical 1
  • Challenging
  • Mileage: 18.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 5,000 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,859 ft

Arranged via email, with a 7:00am start time from Box Canyon.

This trip will NOT be visiting Indian Bar and will depart from the Wonderland Trail at ~5700’ to ascend into Cowlitz Park.  Although we will maintain a steady/moderate pace (with few breaks), this should get us to Point 6859 with time to spare for a quick cat nap.  I expect this trip to be almost a carbon copy of this one.  Photos from past trips can be seen here.
