I have a backcountry camping permit for 5. This will be a 2-night scrambling backpack, starting at Lena Lake trailhead, hiking to past upper Lena Lake to a lesser traveled area to camp night one near a small lake on the Putvin Way Trail. Day 2 will involve scrambling over St Peter's Gate (saddle east of Mt Stone), then down to Lake of Angels and west to Hagen Lake for the second night.

This is beautiful country and the weather should be perfect. After setting up up camp near Hagen Lake we may be able to tag Mt Hopper and return to camp. On Monday we will backtrack to Lake of Angels and descend the very steep Lake of Angels trail to the Hamma Hamma road, 4 miles from our starting point. Setting up a car shuttle will save us a 4 mile road walk.

We will travel and make decisions as a group. This won't be at a fast pace, but not doddling either. We will keep it steady, probably moderate to the slightly slower side of moderate. Keep in mind day one involves gaining nearly 5,000' in 9.5 miles. Most of it on trail. There should be plenty of water along the way so water carry will be minimal.

There are many peaks along the way including Bretherton, Lena, East Lena, Stone, and Skokomish. I'm not planning to tag any of those this trip. I've done all but East Lena. If the group felt great and ahead of schedule, we might consider Bretherton.

Bear cans are required, but we can share space on a short trip like this. Keeping pack weight low is also important to move efficiently.

You need to be comfortable with the pace and gain, and able to scramble on loose talus and steep scree.

I would appreciate reimbursement of the $17 camping fee per person for anyone joining the trip.

When requesting permission, please give me a sense of your overnight and scrambling experience.
