Alpine Scramble - Old Snowy Mountain–Ives Peak Traverse

Two nights, three days backpacking trip. Hike through vibrant wildflower meadows and enjoy panoramic views of Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Adams. Scramble Old snowy to Ives Peak.

Meet at 9:30 AM at Snowgrass Flat trailhead.  We will carpool for those who would like to carpool.

In order to do Old Snowy to Ives Peak traverse,  you need to be a scramble graduate or scramble student.  If you are looking for a fast pace trip, this is not the one for you.

Day 1: start from the Snowgrass Flat TH and hike 3.6 mi to the junction and turn uphill to north on the PCT (about 1.1 mile).  Find a camp along this stretch. Set up camp and optional day hike to Goat Lake. (about 3 miles from the camp site)  

Day 2: Scramble to Old Snowy Mountain and traverse to Ives Peak.

Day 3: Descending the way we came and back to the TH.

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • Bear canister or extra stuff sack and cord designated for hanging food
  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Toilet paper and shovel or blue bag to deal with waste
  • Helmet
  • Microspikes
