Day Hike - Pickhandle Pass

High altitude ramble/lollipop loop on the east side of Crystal Mountain area. From Bullion Basin we will travel north on the PCT to Scout Pass, descend into Lake Basin, then take the trail through Cement Basin south to Crown Point/Blue Bell Pass, then back along the ridge to Bullion Basin and our starting point.

  • Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 10.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft
  • Pace: 2.0 on average, slightly more downhill, slightly less if steep uphill

0700 at Enumclaw Ranger Station or 0800 at Crystal Mountain Resort

Shoulder season hike, so participants should be prepared for rain, cold and even a bit of snow. Serious snow will result in an alternate destination.  I've had good luck doing this loop in the past this time of year, but weather does not always cooperate.

Pace will be  2.0 mph, slightly less on steep uphill parts, more going downhill. There is quite a bit of UP and DOWN and UP and DOWN on this route.  We will stop about 5 minutes every hour(ish) of hiking. Expect an overall faster "pace" as daylight is limited this time of year.

Expect a dry trail, so you wlll need to carry all your water.

Expectations for trip participants:

1. Practice Leave No Trace principles.

2. Have the physical conditioning necessary for this trip. You should be comfortable traveling uphill at 2.0 mph or faster. There is quite a bit of up and down on this trip as we drop into basins and climb back up ridges.

3. Be respectful of all participants.

My goals for this trip are:

1. Be safe.

2. Complete the lollipop loop.

3. Have fun. (Depending on weather there could be some Type 2 fun...)
