Sea Kayak - Marrowstone & Indian Islands Circumnavigation

A three day (two night) camping trip that includes circumnavigation of Marrowstone and Indian Islands. We'll utilize the Cascadia Marine Trail campsites at Kinney Point State park and Oak Bay County Park.

Meet on Wednesday May 17th to launch from the boat ramp at Fort Worden by 11:30 am.  A Discover Pass is required and there is an overnight unattended vehicle parking fee of $10 per night (the pass must be purchased at the Ranger’s Office).

Route Plan

  • Day 1: 10 nm, 11:30 am launch.  Fort Worden to Fort Flagler (on Marrowstone), then through Kilisut Harbor to Kinney Point.  Camping fee is $12 for the group.
  • Day 2: 15 nm, 9 am launch.  Circumnavigate Marrowstone.  Head north on the east side of the island then south through Kilisut Harbor once more before camping at Oak Bay.  Camping fee is $15 for the group.  
  • Day 3: 10 nm,  9 am launch. north through the Port Townsend Ship Canal, following the Kitsap coastline, back to Fort Worden.

Route alteration is possible dependent on weather conditions.

Participant Requirements

  • Paddling strength and endurance to make headway in winds, swells, waves, and cover distance.
  • Cooperation and awareness of others needs so we form an effective and enjoyable team.
  • Dress for immersion.
  • Safely store food as indicated to keep raccoons out.
  • In rougher conditions paddle as a close group for safety and to facilitate decisions.
  • Flat water pace of 3kt or more.

Required Equipment

These eight essentials plus The Ten Essentials are required on all sea kayaking trips.  All but the whistle and clothing should be provided with any kayak rental.

  1. Floatation in both ends of the kayak
  2. U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
  3. Paddle
  4. Spray skirt
  5. Bilge pump with floatation
  6. Self-rescue paddle float
  7. Waterproof whistle
  8. Appropriate clothing for the conditions encountered seasonally
