Swinomish Channel

Trip

Sea Kayak - Swinomish Channel

Edit 10/25/24: Due to forecast winds I’m not planning on doing the thru paddle. We’ll paddle the, hopefully more protected, Swinomish Channel, launch and return to the Twin Bridges Boat Launch. (Original post:I’d like to launch from Cornet Bay, paddle to Goat Island to view Fort Whitman, then paddle the Swinomish Channel to Twin Bridges Boat Launch. Car and kayak shuttle required.)

  • Sea Kayak II/III
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 8.0 nm
  • Maximum Currents: 2 kts

Edit 10/25/24:  meet at Twin Bridges Boat Launch at 8:30 am, launch around 9:30 am.  (Original Post:Initially meet at Twin Bridges boat launch at 7:45 am.  Transfer kayaks to vehicles going to Cornet Bay.  Leave shuttle cars at Twin Bridges Boat Launch.  We’ll launch from Cornet Bay at 9:30 am.)

Edit 10/25/24:  there will be no car shuttle (original post:This will be a long day due to the car shuttling but should not be a very tough paddle.)  We should have current assist the whole way.  We’ll probably be in our kayaks around 2 hours at a time.

Dry suit required.  In addition to your Sea Kayak and ten essentials please ensure you have plenty of water and snacks.  Bring a lunch

If winds are forecast to exceed 12 knots at Kiket/Skagit bays and the Salish Sea we’ll revise the paddle to launch from and return to Twin Bridges Boat Launch.  Thunderstorm forecast will cancel the trip.

I’d like to see Fort Whitman on Goat Island.  However the part of the trail from the beach has been eroding for some time but the rest of the trail is good and it’s not far to Fort Whitman.  If we can scramble that initial part safely we’ll go to Fort Whitman. Otherwise we just wait until the current starts to flow north.

Edit 10/25/24:  we’ll launch around 9:30 am and try to make the entrance of Skagit Bay, south opening of the Swinomish Channel.  We’ll see how the bay looks there and decide if we want to keep going to Goat Island.  If not we return to La Conner and have chowder.
