Burien Parks, Town Square, New and Old Downtown, and other Landmarks
Using sideways and road shoulders a route of one to 3 miles length and under 100 ft elevation gain can be chosen to explore Burien by foot. A number of possible interesting urban walk loops are possible that link several town parks to the old and new downtown areas. There are several options on where to start from that have parking lots, restrooms and transit options.
Getting there
There are several options for where to start from. Depending on their opening hours, parking lots and public restrooms are available close to the Burien Town Square with restrooms in the first floor of the library, the Community Center, and at the Burien Lake School Memorial Park. The best location for bus riders is the Burien Transit Center, 14900 4th Ave SW. Burien, WA 98166. This is situated close to the library and town square.
On the route
The parks that are close to Burien's downtown that can be visited in the same urban walk include Burien Lake School Memorial Park with it's imposing memorial arch, Burien Community Center Park with it's skate park and play fields, and wooded Dottie Harper Park situated close to the Burien Community Center. A short walk from there brings one to the Burien Transit Center and Town Square with its city hall and library. The are many newer shops and cafés close by in the new down town. Then two blocks further west enter the old town to see more shops, cafés, and restaurants plus the Highline Heritage Museum, St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church, and the imposing South Gate Masonic Temple.
The area is largely flat with just a few short hills. Most streets have sidewalks. But care is needed as these can be narrow in places requiring single file walking. Depending on the route chosen some shoulder walking is needed, for which it's important to walk facing the on-coming traffic.
