Columbia River: Skamokawa Area
Skamokawa provides a good launch point for several moderate sea kayak trips in the lower Columbia River. The islands of the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge lie to the south and west and the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-Tailed Deer is to the south and east. Skamokawa Creek and Brooks Slough are also accessible from Skamokawa.
Launch Points
Launch from the beach or boat launch in Skamokawa Vista Park or the dock at the Skamokawa Resort. Both have launch fees. Camping is also available at Skamokawa Vista Park.
On the Water
Access the islands of the Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge and the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge for the Columbian White-Tailed Deer by crossing the main channel of the Columbia River. These islands have lots of wildlife and undeveloped shoreline. Typically these are very low lying with many quiet sloughs. Getting on shore is sometimes difficult due to vegetation and mud. To the south along the Washington shoreline are Price Island and the Hunting Islands with quiet sloughs behind them. A round trip to Cathlamet through this area makes a nice day trip.
