East Canyon Creek

A short canyon known for its sequence of three rapid-fire drops into stunning pools, East Canyon Creek culminates in a deep pool and a set of narrows before merging with the Cispus River. This route is perfect for a full day of canyoning, especially when combined with nearby canyons like Davis Creek or Dark Creek.

GETTING THERE

Access is via FR-23

APPROACH

The approach involves a bushwhack to the canyon’s rim, then a descent into the canyon. It’s recommended to head south on pavement for a bit before starting your bushwhack, arcing south and easterly to the drop-in point, avoiding the misleading direct eastward track.

DESCENT

  • R1: A 20-foot rappel from a tree on the left bank (DCL), or a 15-foot jump DCL or a 30-foot jump on the right bank (DCR) into a deep, wide pool.
  • R2: A 30-foot rappel from a boulder pinch DCL or a 30-foot jump DCL in some years. The rappel goes through a rabbit hole into a rain room, followed by a low angle cascade.
  • R3: A 60-foot rappel off bolts high DCL. Short roping up to 20 feet is possible, leading into a deep and wide pool. A 40-foot jump from a ledge is also an option.

EXIT

Navigate through a short set of narrows to reach the Cispus River. Traverse downstream along the bank for about 300 yards before cutting uphill through the brush to an obvious game trail, leading back to your vehicle.

EQUIPMENT

Standard canyoning gear is required, including replacement webbing and quick links. Be prepared to rebuild anchors and bring a hand line for added safety.
