getting there

From Cle Elum, drive north on SR-903.  At the Salmon la Sac campground junction bear right onto the Little Salmon la Sac road (Forest Road 4330) and drive ~7 miles. This road is narrow and rough with lots of potholes. Turn right onto Road 170 and drive it as far as possible or until reaching the junction with the Van Epps 4WD302 road/trail at 2.5 miles. on the trail

Fortune Creek & Lake Ann

Hike uphill on the Van Epps 4W302 4WD road/trail for ~0.67 mile to the North Fork Fortune Creek Trail (No. 1339). Follow this trail ~1 mile to a junction with the Lake Ann Trail.  Turn right (east) and hike to Van Epps Pass in ~0.5 mile. From Van Epps Pass follow another 4WD track roughly southeast for ~0.5 mile to regain the trail to Lake Ann. It's a little less than 2 miles from Van Epps Pass to Lake Ann.

Scatter Benchmark & Creek

At the junction of the North Fortune Creek trail and the Lake Ann Trail, turn left and follow the trail as it traverses the south facing slopes of the Scatter peaks. The trail climbs 2 miles to a shoulder on the southwest side of Scatter Benchmark before descending another 2 miles to the Scatter Creek draining and disappearing in brush. From the junction it is about 2 miles and 1,000 feet of elevation to the shoulder of Scatter Benchmark.

notes

  • If Road 170 is gated or not driveable, park at the junction with Forest Road 4330 and walk the road. This adds 5  miles round trip.  Another option is to stop at about 6.5 miles up Forest Road 4330 and hike the 4wd road-trail Forest Road 4330-301 which runs parallel to Road 170 and slightly downhill to the Van Epps 4W302 4WD road/trail in ~2 miles.
