Goldendale Sky Village
A dedicated dark sky location for camping, and enjoying and learning about all that the night sky has to offer. It has all the qualities important to astronomers—clear skies, minimal levels of light pollution (it's a "2" on the Bortle scale), good seeing, no neighbors, and low horizons.
about the village
Goldendale Sky Village is a destination intended to preserve and showcase some truly dark skies in the Pacific Northwest. Located in eastern Washington and in the rain shadow of the Cascades, the village offers camping and impressive views of the night sky. There is a telescope field, called The National Dark Sky Portal, or simply "The Portal." It promises to serve as a must-go destination for dark sky pilgrims from all over the Pacific Northwest.
There is a network of roads that largely follow deer trails that give access to all sectors of the village. Portal Rim Road is the first of these, encircling The Portal itself in front of surrounding lots. Other roads reach far and wide and have names related to astronomy: Milky Way, Right Ascension Drive, Declination Drive, Pixel Place, Ophiuchi Row, Collimation Street (named after a famous British TV soap opera), Barnard’s Loop, and Lunar Crescent. All roads serve local neighborhoods known as "clusters," each with its own telescope field and surrounding lots. Supercluster is the first of these to be operational, smaller and more intimate than The Portal and an excellent setting for the serious observer.
