Hannegan Pass Road
Closed to motorized traffic in winter this road, Forest Road 32 in the North Cascades near Mount Baker, offers up to 6 miles of beginner-friendly winter recreation. The road is occasionally groomed for cross-country skiers. Take in views of the Nooksack River and Mount Shuksan.
getting there
Drive SR-542 to ~12.5 miles east of Glacier (~0.5 mile before the Salmon Ridge Sno-Park). There is ample parking and an outhouse at the Shuksan picnic area at the junction of Hannegan Pass Road and State Route 542 (1,950 ft).
cross-country ski & snowshoe route
Snowshoers and cross-country skiers can choose from two easy routes that begin at the Shuksan picnic area where Hannegan Pass Road (Forest Road 32) meets SR-542.
The first option is to simply travel out and back on Hannegan Pass Road. After 1.4 miles on Hannegan Pass Road, arrive at a signed junction with Forest Road 34. Take the left fork uphill to continue on Hannegan Pass Road. Travel up to 3 miles or so, and be sure to turn around at or before the Goat Mountain trailhead to avoid hazardous avalanche slopes. The first mile is very flat, and then the road steepens for the next two miles. This route is up to 6 miles round trip with up to 600 feet of elevation gain.
The second option is also an out-and-back trip. It is flatter and avoids avalanche terrain. After proceeding 1.4 miles on Hannegan Pass Road, arrive at a signed junction with Forest Road 34. Take the right fork and head towards the Nooksack Cirque trailhead. Turn around at the Nooksack Cirque trailhead where there are views of Ruth Creek. This route is 4.6 miles round trip with 200 feet of elevation gain.
