on the trail
Iron Peak (6,510 ft)
7 miles round trip, 2,700 feet of elevation gain, difficulty: moderate
The zigzagging trail up the rib toward Iron Peak has creeks on both sides which are out of reach, so there is no water on the trail. In the summer, get an early start as the trail is hot and dry then. The trail hosts a profusion of wildflowers and views up and across the Teanaway Valley, and at the top, views of Mount Stuart. Small, wet meadows melt out late and contain many wildflowers; the serpentine barrens hold unusual endemics which grow only in the Wentchee Mountains.
Longs Pass (6,250 ft) & Iron Peak (6,510 ft) Loop
14.2-mile loop, 4,500 feet of elevation gain, difficulty: strenuous
To hike this loop clockwise, hike north from the DeRoux Trailhead on Trail No. 1358 that parallels the Teanaway River Road and North Fork Teanaway River to the Esmerelda Basin Trailhead (4,200 ft). Hike the Esmerelda Trail (No. 1394) for 0.5 mile, then take Lake Ingalls Trail (No. 1390) for 2.0 miles. Turn right on Trail No. 1299 to Longs Pass (6,300 ft) and hike 0.5 mile to the pass. From the pass descend 1.1 miles to Ingalls Creek. Turn right (east) on Ingalls Creek Trail (No. 1215) for 0.5 miles. Turn right (south) on the Beverly Turnpike Creek Trail (No. 1391), cross Ingalls Creek and head up Beverly Turnpike Creek valley, reaching the pass at 2.6 miles. Cross the pass and descend 0.4 miles to the junction with Trail (No. 1399). Turn right (uphill and west) on Trail No. 1399 to the saddle below Iron Peak (0.5 miles). Descend 3 miles to the Iron Peak trailhead on North Fork Teanaway road (3,800 ft).
