Malachite Peak

A moderate scramble in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness near Skykomish. Malachite has two peaks, 0.5 mile apart and both of which are good scramble destinations.

Getting There

Drive SR-2 to Skykomish, turn right onto Foss River Road continue to Forest Road 6840 (Maloney Ridge Road), drive ~3 miles, and turn sharply left turn onto Forest Road 6846, ad drive to Evans Lake Trailhead (3,600 ft).

Approach & Ascent

Malachite Peak/North Peak (6,208 ft)

6 miles round trip, 2,500 feet of elevation gain, difficulty: Strenuous 3, Technical 3

Hike 0.25 miles toward Evans Lake and look for a hikers path on right up a steep bank. The path is steep for about 0.6 miles and then reaches a small pond. Continue ascending to a ridge 5,200 ft and then head south on path toward Rock Lake. Near the lake leave the  path at the 4,800 ft. follow this contour to the south reaching a gully with a stream. Follow this stream (south) to a large tarn (5,250 ft.). Leaving tarn follow a faint path southeast a saddle at 5,600 ft with a view of Panorama Lake. Descend 150 feet heading south and skirting the cliffs on the west, continue up to the saddle between Malachite and North Malachite Peaks at 5,900 ft with a view of Pervis Lake. Head north to the summit. South ascent  is class  4, west approach  a class 3 (scramble).
