Middle Fork Teanaway

A moderate hike with lots of stream crossings that is best done later in the season and in hot weather. Hike upriver from 4 to as many as 14 miles or make a loop trip with other nearby trails. The Middle Fork Teanaway Trail is open to motorcycles, and though lightly traveled because of the stream crossings, it it better to hike it midweek to avoid them.

Getting There

From SR-970 turn onto Teanaway River Road. Turn left at its junction with the North Fork Teanaway River Road, drive toward the Teanaway Campground, and turn right onto the Middle Fork Teanaway River Road. Drive past Indian Campground to the Middle Fork Teanaway Trailhead (2,800 ft).

On the Trail

Out-and-Back

Hike the Middle Fork Teanaway Trail as it follows the river bottom upstream and crosses the river several time—none of crossings have a bridged. At 3.3 miles reach the junction with the Way Creek Trail that heads east. Continue straight and reach the junction with the Jolly Mountain Trail in 3.5 miles. Take the right fork to continue on the Middle Fork Teanaway Trail for 1  miles where it intersects with the Johnson-Medra Trail. Continue straight and hike 3 miles to the upper headwaters of the river and junction with the trail  down to DeRoux creek. The Middle Fork Teanaway Trail continues up into the basin and at the ridgeline connects with additional trails  leading down to Paris Creek and Big Boulder Creek.

Loop Trips

  • The Middle Fork Teanaway Trail between Way Creek and Medra Creek is part of the Jungle Creek Loop and is another way to access hiking that loop.
  • After hiking 7 miles north on the Middle Fork Teanaway Trail the Jolly Creek Trail, Yellow Hill Trail, and ½ mile on the Middle Fork Teanaway River Road make a nice loop trip.
  • At its north end, the Middle Fork Teanaway trail connects to the Paris Creek Trail which can hiked to the Jolly Mountain Trail and then to the Yellow Hill Trail.

Notes

  • Because of the several river crossings with no bridge that will lead to wet feet, the trail is best hiked later in the season and on a hot day.
  • The trail is open to motorcycles, and though it does not get much use because of the many stream crossings  and lack of long distance views, it's better to hike the Middle Fork Teanaway Trail midweek. to avoid them.
