Protection Island

An aquatic reserve in Puget Sound near Port Townsend where landing a sea kayak is not permitted. Many marine animals pup on the island and other wildlife and sea birds nesting in the area can be seen too.

Launch Point

  • Diamond Point. From US-101 in Gardiner turn north onto Diamond Point Road. Just past the Diamond Point Airstrip, turn left onto North Diamond Shore Lane, then right onto Beach Drive to Diamond Point.

    All the property in the area is private property. The local property owner on west side of water access told us  it is okay to park diagonally between stop sign and his driveway in front of the three car garage (see aerial view). There limited room for parking. Please park six or fewer cars here.

Paddle from from Diamond Point to Protection Island, around the island, and back. Note that the island is the Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge is closed to visitation, so landing on the island is prohibited.
