Ravenna Creek: Union Bay Natural Area
A birdwatching tour and beaver search from the best vantage point, on the water. Putting in where Ravenna Creek is navigable to the marshlands of the Union Bay Natural Area, this is a unique flatwater trip right in our back yard in Seattle that is only available to packrafts which can squeeze through the narrow confines of the creek and wooded marsh.
LAUNCH POINT
- NE Clark Rd Bridge Park at UW Lot E14 across from UW Golf Range. This is a paid public parking lot. There is a nice grassy area to gear up. Walk 200 feet to the bridge. Although it may be possible, the university discourages launching from the ASUW Shell House or from Parking Lot E8.
NOTES
- Lower Ravenna will have wood obstacles that involve duckunders, scootch-overs, and tactical moves. However, the consequences are minimal as there is rarely consequential flow.
- Once upon the secluded channel of Lower Ravenna Creek the sounds and thoughts of the urban environment so close by soon melt away. Tucked under the forest canopy and alongside the protected UW Wetlands, this is one of Seattle's gems. Coming out of Ravenna creek leads to Union Bay Natural Area with the potential for many wildlife sitings.
- There is the option to continue on to the Union Bay Boglands, make a crossing from Webster Point to Foster Island and continue through the slough to Duck Bay. In this relatively secluded bay, fetch is limited and difficult conditions with stubborn whitecaps are rare.
- For birdwatchers, the usual suspects abound - Great Blue Heron, Canadian Geese, Mallard Ducks, but the discerning eye may even spot Green Heron. Beaver homes are easy to spot, and a tail slapping beaver is not uncommon to come across. Otter are claimed to have been in the area.
- The route can be augmented with optional walking tours through Union Bay Natural Area, Yesler Swamplands, Foster Island, Washington Park Arboretum, Marsh Island Trail, and East Montlake Park.
