Alpine Scramble - August Peak, Virgina Peak, Berry Peak & Martin Peak

Lots of new snow above 4200' Rerouted trip originally listed to start at the Carbon entrance.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  •  A few inches of fresh dry snow  at TH,  18 inches at 5000' Did not need snow shoes.

Lot's of potholes on the Mowich Road, snow on edges of road  above 3400'. Parked on the wide spot in the road shortly after entering the Park.  Started with a few inches of snow on the old Boundary  trail. Left the trail headed East  to Virginia, ran ridges to Berry then to August. Dropped off the west side of the ridge to 4600' on the way to August.

In the interest in seeing what it would take to complete the Boundary trail to the Carbon River entrance, explored the beginning of a route down to Tolmie creek. From the saddle to the East of August descended North 600 ft sticking mostly to a minor ridge.   Good route, got thru the steepest terrain, started return at 12:40. Snow cover made travel thru vegetation easier. Saw some devils club stalks. Returned to saddle then south to the trail. Wet afternoon, as fresh snow rained down off the trees with rising temps and wind. Possibly some rain mixed in as well. Wind increasing in afternoon. Left car at 7:30, return at 2:30. About 8 miles,  3700 ft of gain.
