Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Camp Muir & Anvil Rock

Unexpected adventures added to this fabulous day on our favorite volcano!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • This trip was originally planned as only summiting Anvil Rock, but since we reached it in 4.5 hours we had time after a leisurely lunch and decided to head up to Camp Muir. After reaching Camp Muir, we decided to scramble up Muir Peak and get yet another birds eye view!  Awesome views everywhere, we couldn't take enough photos! I had the pleasure of the company of three excellent and strong Mountaineer scramblers!

Only one other person arrived at Anvil Rock as we were leaving, and no one else joined us on Muir Peak. We donned micro-spikes shortly after leaving Paradise at 7:20 due to icy snow patches. Took them off on the upper Pebble Creek trail. Weather was perfect, with no wind at all and a clear blue sky. Could even see Mt. Jefferson in Oregon. Not as many people as I expected. Maybe fathers day kept people home.

Spotted a pair of Ptarmigans along the Pebble Creek trail. They had no fear of humans and seemed to like having their picture taken. We also saw several marmots, and one in particular on our way down appeared to not be aware of us - he or she was busy eating wildflowers!
