Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Camp Muir & Anvil Rock

An enjoyable snow scramble of Anvil rock.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Paradise is mostly snow-free and snow is intermittent  till above Panorama Point.   Contrary to the description in the 100 peaks around Mount Rainier, the summit of Anvil Rock is easily attainable, no need to resort to merely touching it with a trekking pole.

We started in fog but soon climbed out of it, providing us with a wonderful sea of clouds effect with Adams peeking out to the south.  We encountered only one other party on Anvil Rock.  On descent, the clouds had risen above us and the whole return was in, at times, dense fog.  Route finding was unproblematic however, as the multitudes heading to Camp Muir had left an all too clear trail back.

We saw a grouse displaying its vocal bulb, goats on the next ridge and plenty of marmots.
