Alpine Scramble - Devil's Head

We scrambled Bean Peak and Devil's Head on a hot sunny day. One party member got in their graduation scramble, and another completed the Teanaway 20!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The route was completely snow free. There was flowing water in the creeks, which was nice for water refills, but it was not a high enough level to make creek crossing a problem. We did not need to change our shoes for the crossings. We encountered many blowdowns on the trails, but otherwise the route was in good condition. There was a significant number of wildflowers in bloom. We encountered a significant number of backpackers on the trail.

This was my second mentored scramble to become a scramble leader. One participant was completing their graduation scramble, and my co-leader was finishing the Teanaway 20. We started off on the Beverly Turnpike Trail to Bean Creek Trail. The trail was in fairly standard conditions, although we were happy that the creek level was low so the crossing was not problematic. We took a more technical off-trail route up Bean Peak  to give students more scrambling experience. We arrived at the ridge line, then traveled around and past Volcanic Neck to get to Devil's Head. It was further than we were expecting, but not very technical. On the way back, instead of descending Bean, we took the Hardscrabble Creek Trail to Fourth Creek Trail and Beverly Turnpike Trail. This was a longer distance than doing an out-and-back, but may still have taken less time as it was not as technical. We had discussed previously potentially doing Bill's Peak as well, but decided that with the weather being so hot and sunny, we did not want to do a second, more strenuous peak with no shade. Everyone seemed happy with that decision!
