Alpine Scramble - Hidden Lake Lookout & Peak

Lollipop loop snow scramble of Hidden Lake Peak N Peak via N Ridge, down S ridge and up to S (Lookout) Peak (rock+snow), then out via the (snow-covered) trail.

  • Road recommended for high clearance only
  • Continuous snow from about 4900' --snow is slow to melt out this year... The very summits of both peaks were completely melted out though.

Beautiful day to scramble Hidden Lake Peaks N and S... Mountaineers party of 9, we ascended snow to the N ridge and crossed over to the E side, then regained the ridge shortly N of the summit. Descended the S ridge to the saddle between N and S peaks. Five of us continued to the S (Lookout) peak, traversing snow-covered trail to melted out switchbacks, then trail until snow-covered again, then directly up the snow to high 3rd class rock scrambling directly to the summit. Some awkward moves and exposure but the rock is solid. Checked out the lookout cabin then descended to the SE and back over the E ridge to the saddle, then out. Getting over the E ridge back to melted out trail was tedious due to soft thin snow with hidden voids. 9 hours c2c including about 45 minutes on summits.

Rock credit option for three students who summitted the S (Lookout) peak:  Gene Ahn, Alex Driban, Ben Stobaugh.
