Backcountry Ski/Snowboard - Mount Ruth (Mount Rainier)

Excellent snow coverage starts a bit before the summer trail begins. Ski descent of Inter Glacier was very good although the snow was a bit wet and sticky.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Saved a bit of time hiking to and out of Glacier Basin given the excellent snow coverage which allowed us to leave the summer trail at the very last switchback.

While there was a bit of avy debris on the trail, and a couple of the bridge creek crossings were slightly sketchy, the trek to and out of GB was straightforward.

We began skinning up from GB and did not need to transition to booting during the entire route.

No signups so I ended up doing this tour with a friend.

We ascended Ruth via its standard route and descended via Inter Glacier. Surprisingly few people on our ascent route.

From the Mt Ruth ridge to Inter Glacier, we skied the entire way back to GB. Snow was a bit heavy and sticky but ski penetration depth was reasonable making for a fun descent.
