Trip Report

Backpack - Seven Lakes Basin

Great 3-day trip, if a little smoky.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

We had a great time on the High Divide, although we encountered hot, smoky conditions. Blueberries and huckleberries are everywhere, and we definitely had our fill. We camped at Heart Lake the first night, and Lunch Lake the second night.

I'm leaving a trip report largely to let other leaders know of the campsite situation. Although the maximum group size per Olympic National Park is six people, the "large" campsites at Heart Lake and Lunch Lake would not fit six one person tents. I'd done this route before, and remembered the campsites were small, but was a little surprised by how small. We found a suitable campsite at Heart Lake for four one-person tents. Our campsite at Lunch Lake barely fit four tents. Trip members reported that the other occupied "large" sites at Lunch Lake would fit four one-person tents - we just got the small one.

Another quick note about the trail to Bogachiel Peak. We thought the approach was from the rocky peaks encountered just before Bogachiel Peak, going clockwise. We followed a way trail that ran the ridge, and when it turned scrambly, realized we were off route. After assessing the situation as a group, we backtracked and found the more established (and obvious)  trail. If you stop at the rocky area, rather than following one of the way trails there, go back to the High Divide trail and follow it until you find the turnoff  onto the trail to the peak.
