Basic Alpine Climb - Sahale Peak/South Slope

South Slope Route has no problems and small crevasses. However, when looking at the glacier from the summit, there are obvious sags that may soon open up.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The glacier looks benign, but there are crevasses waiting to open. No problems with the route. The scrambling is class 3, but I would say 1 class 4 exposed move 100' below the summit, and again just before the top.  We set up a hand line for both class 4 moves. Beware of thunderstorms. We has nearby thunder when we were on the summit around 1PM.

We spent a lot of time on the summit block with handlines and a double rope rappel. 15 hours car-to-car.

There is water available on Sahale arm ~800 vertical feet below the moraine. We all went through a lot of water in the warm weather (4-5 liters each).
