Trip Report

Basic Alpine Climb - Sloan Peak/Corkscrew Route

Road in good condition, but a sign said it would close August 19--31st? The "trail" is overgrown. Some bushwhacking around river crossing. Sloan glacier looks sad.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • We turned back because we reached our turnaround time, to ensure we had light to cross the river.

River: there are 3 crossings. Cross first on logs. Head upstream ~200' to make the second crossing easy. Head upstream again until you can easily cross a big sand bar. Upstream 200' and the trail is on the other side.

The trail is slow because it is overgrown with logs etc. Watch out for bee nest shortly after the river. They are loud, nasty, and enjoy leaving their stingers in human flesh.

The glacier is minging and sad compared to June. Climbers were seen crossing the top, heading across, but it appeared that getting on the glacier and the first 300' might be exposed and challenging.

Strong parties could do this car-to-car, but 2 days would be better. The glacier may require a lot of time.
