Trip Report

Basic Snowshoe - Tonga Ridge (winter)

Snowshoe up road 6830 towards Tonga Ridge

  • Snow and ice on road
  • Consolidated cars at intersection about one mile before road 6830 into the high clearance all wheel drive vehicles.  Deep snow after that.  We were able to park at the 6830 intersection but it did take some shoveling to get the vehicles turned around.  Route was a little crunchy icy in the morning but softer as we gained elevation and the day wore on.

No driving up to Tonga ridge.  The best we could do was the intersection at the start of road 6830.  We hiked about 3.75 miles up the road from there gaining a little over 1300 feet.

Good weather.  It was cloudy, light clouds, and dry all day.  Some small sun breaks in the afternoon.  Not too hot not too cool.

After hitting a road switchback around 2850 feet we decided that was a good place to stop and lunch.  There were peekaboo views through the trees of Bald Eagle and Hinman peaks.  While we were there a hawk was flying over head.

We had seen tracks in the snow of various critters, probably mostly rabbits, but didn't see any other wildlife.

Started our trek right around 9:00AM and got back to the cars at 1:50PM.

The snow was softer in the afternoon which made driving out a little more spinny.  We had to shovel out one of the vehicles on the way down.
