Day Hike - Coal Creek Natural Area

Beautiful spring greens hike along the Coal Creek River/Natural Area to Newcastle Beach Park

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail a bit muddy in places but most areas had pea gravel which helped with grip.  There were 2 downed trees we needed to climb over on the trail.

Ample parking, with porta potties to use.  No parking pass needed.  Off Coal Creek Parkway so easily accessible from both North and South.

Weather was partly sunny, but typical spring weather made dressing in layers wise.

Love hiking this trail during the early spring time:  Osoberry bushes and trillium blooming.  Other trees starting to bud.  Lots of ferns and mosses to look at.  Glimpses of Coal Creek from the trail with a few access points if you wanted to stop.  We heard multiple different bird songs during our trip.  The trail emerges onto Coal Creek Parkway again with a few road crossings to join the Easttrail multi use trail that leads to Newcastle Beach park in 0.5 mi.  This is a lovely place to stop for a lunch break and then head back to the trail.

The hike could be extended by starting at the YMCA traihead or even Red Town trailhead.
