Day Hike - Crystal Peak (Mount Rainier)

Sweeping views of Mount Rainier and the White River Valley on a beautiful, sunny day.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles

This was part of Tacoma Branch Lookouts and High Places series of day hikes. Our goal was a rocky outcropping that used to have a fire lookout tower built in 1934, removed in the 1970’s. This hike is unique in that it has the most conifer species found on any single hike in our state (15 of 18).

We carpooled from Enumclaw and arrived at Crystal Lakes trailhead at 7:45am. There were only a few cars on Wednesday morning with plenty of parking still available. The weather was beautiful all day. Not too hot, and plenty of blue sky.

The trail climbs along a series of switchbacks under evergreen canopy the first 1.3 miles to the Crystal Lakes junction. Turning right, we followed the less-traveled peak trail and crossed Crystal Creek. The log bridge with handrail was in great shape. Plenty of flowing water. We continued a gradual traverse with intermittent views of Mount Rainier and the White River Valley.

About half-way up, there was one tree across the trail, but we were able to climb over without too much difficulty. At 5,200' the trail opened to sloped meadows. Wildflowers were abundant. We took short rest breaks at various viewpoints to enjoy the scenery. It’s an easy, gradual climb all the way until reaching a very short ridge section to the summit. There are panoramic views all around. Close by is Chinook Peak, Crystal Lake, Three-Way Peak, Silver King, and the top of Crystal Mountain Resort.

In the distance, we were able to see five of the advertised six volcanoes: Rainier, Adams, Hood, St Helens, and Glacier Peak. Mount Baker was obscured by some clouds. We enjoyed a long break for lunch. There were only a few bugs. After a group photo, we returned the same way.
