Trip Report

Day Hike - Glacier Basin (Mount Rainier)

Our group of eleven had a great time and enjoyed dramatic views on this wonderful hike! Also, congrats to our seven Olympia Conditioning Hiking Series (CHS) students who experienced new kinds of fun and challenges on snowy terrain!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Patchy snow started a little more than half-way to the basin, and quickly became little rolling hills several feet thick.  A large earlier season avalanche had taken out many trees just before the basin and blocked the trail. Park personnel marked it with sticks, and there was a good boot path detour.

On and off clouds early in the day, with clearing in the afternoon. There is a good bridge over the river to reach the Emmons view trail. We went there on the way back and were greeted with fantastic views.  This was a very fun day with great hikers!
