Day Hike - Lime Kiln Trail

A lovely winter hike.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • New trail signs are in place. Some mud and woody debris on trail, but otherwise, it's in great condition.

We lucked out with the weather and the rain held off until we were almost back to the cars. Lightening was forecast in the afternoon. That would have only been an issue in the mile or so from the cars, or at the main kiln, with saw blades and other metal laying around.  We talked through what we would do, just in case, and proceeded with the hike.

Everyone commented on how pretty this hike was. The ferns and moss were vibrant. The river was raging but the trail stays so far above it, there was no issue of flooding. We took lunch in the forest in the middle of the final loop.

This is a lovely lowland hike, when  other destinations are still under snow. The hike filled fast, with seven on the waitlist. Then a storm hit the area. Fourteen cancelled and two others signed up. We ended up with seven, which is a good size for keeping the group together on this trail.
