Day Hike - Mount Rose

More like a late winter hike than early spring!

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The trail to Horse Camp is in excellent condition. Above Horse Camp (left side), old patchy snow began around 3,300'. We used spikes shortly after that. The beaten track was not entirely clear due to melting and also from having been rained on recently. I judged the snow to be unsafe for my group of six hikers, some of whom had little experience in those conditions, and one without spikes. Holes near logs were potential postholing hazards. Given our pace and increasing rain, I decided to turn around at approximately 3,600' but also call our adventure a success. It was a fun group and we were a great team!
