We hiked up to Norse Peak via the Bullion Basin trail. From the basin, we took the shorter, direct East Peak trail up to the Pacific Crest Trail. On the way down, we took the longer but easier PCT/Bullion Basin trail. The route to Norse Peak was easy to follow along the ridges, via Scout Pass.
We arrived at the Crystal Mt ski resort just before 8 a.m. and had plenty of parking. Trail conditions were dusty, but otherwise good. It was overcast all day, and we had a few rain sprinkles. It was cooler than we had anticipated, and the rain drops felt good! There some bugs, but they weren't too bad. We had a glimpse of elk moving into the trees as we left the parking lot. Our only other wildlife sighting was a grouse that perched in a tree on East Peak. The hike along the ridge, between East Peak and Norse Peak, was interesting as we passed through the burn area from the 2017 fire. We had lunch at the top of Norse Peak and enjoyed the views to Basin Lake and beyond. Rainier was visible, but in a lot of haze. It was a good day, and everyone in the group did well.
