Trip Report

Day Hike - Rattlesnake Ledge

Had a great day on our hike up to Rattlesnake Ledge and then around Rattlesnake Lake.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The trail was mostly dry-ish and in good condition with no running water on the trail and very few muddy areas. Any kind of footwear would be suitable.
Even on an overcast winter day, the trail was quite busy with people and dogs. We hung back a bit until there was a lull in the traffic so we wouldn't have other groups immediately behind and in front of us. The trail was mostly dry-ish and in good condition with no running water on the trail and very few muddy areas. Any kind of footwear would be suitable. At the top, it was a bit windy; I was glad I had an extra layer to put on. There was a good crowd at the top, but plenty of room for all. Because of the low clouds, Mount Si, Mount Washington, and other distant peaks could not be seen, but the view of the nearer scenery and the Lake was still quite nice. The trek down was uneventful aside from passing many other hikers. Once we started on our hike around the lake, then we had some solitude. From the Rattlesnake Ledge official trailhead and portable toilets, we went counterclockwise along the lake shore. Just past the "large boulder" a well-worn trail was apparent. There was plenty of room between the shore and the tree line, so I expect the trail to be accessible for many more weeks/months before the water rises and cuts it off. On the far (south west) side of the lake, there is a creek crossing which took some clever rock hopping and balancing across strategically placed logs. We took a break for lunch here, which was a great spot as we were surrounded by the massive tree stumps with the lake and Rattlesnake Ledge in the background. We continued around on the lakeshore and then moved to the paved path that runs along half of the south east side of the lake until we were back to the parking lot.
Total distance: 6.05 miles.  Moving time: 2 hr 40 min.
