Trip Report

Day Hike - Windy Ridge and the Plains of Abraham

Views of the Mt. St. Helens dome and surrounding peaks.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The route starts on a utility road for 1.7 miles. After that, there is a fairly steep ascent up a narrow ridge with pumice held in place by step ladders. I never felt it was dangerous, but some might.

It was a beautiful day. Be prepared that there is almost no shade on this trail and no water. The view into the crater is awesome. Many wildflowers are blooming now, Paintbrush is predominant. There are excellent views of Mt Adams and Mt. Hood. There is a camp before Pumice Butte that makes a good lunch spot.
