A nice-sized group of 5 hikers set out from the Upper Trailhead to Lizard Lake. The forecast was for rain and wind, 25-35mph with gusts of 40 - 45mph, not the greatest weather for a hike in the forest. We had some rain and wind before reaching North Butte for our "view" which was mostly trees and cloud so we descended to Lily Lake for lunch where we were surprised to find benches and grates with firewood. Our butts appreciated the benches and then the sun came out to greet us as we were packing up.

The return trip down Max's Shortcut (it's not a shortcut) was the best part of the hike, with bright greens of every shade sharpening our vision. First there was ferns, then Salal, then we had views out to the farmland, all the while keeping an eye on the trees swaying in the wind above us. Bending was all they did, no breaking was heard.
